Keys to Relationships That Last

By Annette Ermshar
Special to the Outlook

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, many of us have romance and relationships on our minds. Perhaps we are asking ourselves, how do we build or maintain relationships that last? What makes some relationships last and others fail?
Most people would agree that healthy relationships have key traits that help the couple to sustain the impact of stressful life circumstances. The pandemic has certainly been a litmus test for relationships. In my private practice, during the last two years I have seen many client relationships that have either crumbled under the stress or have grown stronger together as they faced the uncertainty as partners.
While no relationship is perfect all the time, there are core values that support a foundation for long-term relationship success. Research shows that resilient couples who are able to manage stressful and significant events as a team and maintain a strong relationship over time share the following common qualities:

New Year’s Resolution Revolution

Special to the Outlook

As we say goodbye to yet another calendar year, for most of us it was a year full of ups and downs, progress and setbacks, and achievements and failures.

And for many, the close of the year signals creating new resolutions for 2023, or the review of the New Year’s resolutions we set at the start of 2022. How have you fared in accomplishing the resolutions you set for yourself this past year?

Historically, the onset of New Year’s resolutions was said to have started with ancient Babylonians about 4,000 years ago. The Babylonians made promises to the gods to pay their debts in hopes of bestowing favor onto the person for the coming year.

Remain Mindful of Back-to-School Stressors

As the new school year is upon us, there are many conversations occurring about the impact of current events and stressors on the emotional and physical health of our youth.

Questions about how the pandemic has impacted the development of social skills, self-esteem and scholastic achievement are high on the minds of parents and educators. In the fall of 2020, the American Academy of Pediatrics, Children’s Hospital Association (CHA), and American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry declared an emergency in child and adolescent mental health. According to 2021 data from the CHA, there were more than 47,000 mental health visits to emergency rooms at children’s hospitals countrywide, which was almost 40% higher compared to 2020. Other reported signs of distress among students include increases in acts of aggression, self-harm, depression and suicidality.

Back to School: Students’ Resocialization and Psychology

“While we find ourselves grappling with the new norms of our changing world, a return to a regular school year for our students is imminent. Youth are transitioning back to a traditional classroom-based academic year with regular school-based and extra-curricular activities.
