New research shows that omega-3 fatty acids may prevent the onset of schizophrenia in those at risk of the disease. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in foods like fish and walnuts, have been found to improve heart health, arthritis, depression, and inflammatory diseases. The researchers hypothesized that brain inflammation might play a role in schizophrenia and wondered if an anti-inflammatory such as Omega-3s could help. Only 10% of participants who took the fish oil supplement (omega-3) developed full-blown schizophrenia, compared to the 40% who did in the placebo group. Interestingly, the study also revealed that when participants stopped taking omega-3s they were significantly less likely to develop psychosis for several years. To read the full article click here.
